Jack Quentin Smith (c.1937-1948) Murdered 12 Apr 1948 The 11-year-old was found murdered on a railway embankment for the Manchester to Bolton line near his home in Bradford Road in New Bury, Farnworth on Monday 12 April 1948. He had been stabbed sometime between 4.20pm and 5pm. His companion, a 9-year old boy was also stabbed, but survived. The boys were both pupils of Highfield School.

The only Liverpool Pal to be executed in the Great War.
The only Boltonian to be ‘shot at dawn’ after being found guilty by a military tribunal of desertion and cowardice.
He was one of 306 Britons who were executed in the war, granted pardons by Parliament in 2006.

Joe Smith Crewe Alexandra forward Joe Smith never made an appearance for his first club and joined Wanderers in 1908. He stayed for 20 years and scored over 250 goals, holding the club’s scoring record until he was surpassed in the 1950s by the legendary Nat Lofthouse. Smith might well still hold the scoring record were it not for the First World War, which robbed him – and Wanderers – of six prime seasons. In the lead up to the War he finished top scorer in three season out of four, and once peace returned he kept on scoring, breaking the club’s record in 1920-21 with 38 goals. Throughout the rest of Smith’s time at the club the Trotters consistently finished in the top six

Chaired the official inquiry into the activities of serial-killer Dr Harold Shipman. Called to the bar in 1972. QC by 1986. Recorder by 1988 and a High Court Judge by 1992. Created a DBE in 1992.
Samuel Smith A multiplane, probably inspired by Horatio Phillip's work, was actually built by Samuel Smith of Bolton, Lancashire, UK in 1910-12. Some further details about this plane can be found on page 279 of the book 'British Aircraft Before the Great War' by Goodall & Tagg.

Ronald (Ron) Spencer (1930-1998) Comic illustrator Born 31 December 1930 Preston, Lancashire Died July 1998 Bolton Educated Bolton Art School. Illustrated various strips in the Beano, Dandy and other D C Thompson comics, including 'The Bash Street Kids', 'Little Plum' and 'Baby Face Finlayson "The Cutest Bandit in the West".' Moved to Bolton when he was 8 years old. Served as a tank operator in the Korean War.

Humphrey Spender (1910-2005) British photographer, painter, and designer. Born: 10 April 1910, London Died: 11 March 2005, Ulting. Spender became a member of the Mass Observation movement, taking pictures of daily life in working class communities. His most famous photographs are of the 'Worktown Study'. (Worktown was the Mass Observationist's codename for Bolton). Taken in a period between 1937 and 1940, his photographs cover the full range of Mass-Observation’s interests – politics and elections; religion; street scenes; industrial landscapes; the public house; market scenes; new buildings and developments; observers in action; sport and leisure time; work in the textile mills; on holiday in Blackpool; street hoardings and advertisements. Spender was joined in this project by the artist, Graham Bell. Toward the end of his involvement with Mass Observation, Spender also took on work as a photographer for the recently established, highly successful photographically illustrated magazine Picture Post.

Squadron Leader Laurence William Fraser (Pinkie) Stark (1920-2004) WWII Fighter Pilot Born 16 November 1920 Bolton Died 1 August 2004 Medway, Kent Educated Bolton School; College of Technology, Manchester Joined 609 Squadron in 1943 flying Typhoons - shot down 6 enemy aircraft. Posted to 263 Squadron as Flight Commander in 1944 ground attack duties in support of D-Day and after - awarded DFC and later a bar to the medal. Shot down in France but quickly found his way back home to England with the help of the Resistance. Returned to command 609 Squadron as Squadron Leader. Survived 255 operational sorties. Refused promotion (to keep flying) and retired from RAF in 1963.

Edmund Clifton Stoner FRS (1899-1968) British theoretical physicist Born 2 October 1899 Esher, Surrey, England the son of cricketer Arthur Hallett Stoner. Died 27 December 1968 Leeds, England He won a scholarship to Bolton School (1911–1918). He is principally known for his work on the origin and nature of itinerant ferromagnetism (the type of ferromagnetic behaviour associated with pure transition metals like cobalt, nickel, and iron), including the collective electron theory of ferromagnetism and the Stoner criterion for ferromagnetism.

Minnie Stott (1923-1940) Grocery shop manageress. Born 18 Aug 1923 at 214 Whitegate Drive, Blackpool Found strangled to death at the age of 17 through an archway on Parker’s Garage in Bradshawgate, Bolton on November 16, 1940. Her green scarf, which was believed to have been used in the murder, has never been found. Another item of clothing, her blue satin cami-knickers, were never discovered. It was a case that was covered nationally but Minnie's murderer has never been caught.
She worked at Hanburys branch shop near the junction of Elgin Street and Eskerick Street, and lived at 124 Clarence Street, Bolton.
