1981 The British Aerospace Apprentices team, most of them L.R.C. members and led by the indefatigable Dave Walker, were the victors in the 24 Hour Mini Le Mans pedal car race in Moss Bank Park, Bolton. The event is held on a circuit of 0.341 of a mile, and the B.Ae. team of six riders covered 1069 laps in the 24 hours, totalling 364 miles at an average speed of 15.167 mph, finishing 67 laps ahead of their nearest rivals. This was the third time that this annual event had been won by the B.Ae. team. The event is very popular with spectators, always attracting big crowds, with an estimated 5000 having watched the race during the 24-hour period. Through sponsorship, the Mini Le Mans race realised £6000 for the Guide Dogs for the Blind training centre in Bolton.
The pedal car had been built by the apprentices at B.Ae. and, after the triumph on their home ground, they went on to compete in the National Pedal Car Championship held at Milton Keynes. Despite being up against some of the powerful motor industry-backed teams from the Midlands, the B.Ae. /L.R.C. team were again victorious.

1982 (11 Mar) PC John Egerton, aged 20, from Farnworth, Bolton, was stabbed to death in a factory yard in Farnworth on March 11, 1982, as he tried to arrest a man, he caught siphoning petrol from a van.

The 20-year-old, from Farnworth, was stabbed at least four times, once through the heart. He had been called to the Dynamics Plastic works to help PC David O'Brien, who saw a man climbing over the factory gate. Minutes later, PC O'Brien found the body of his colleague and close friend. PC Egerton's killer, Arthur Edge, was jailed for life and released in 2000 after 18 years.

1982 In 1982 Hubert "Bertie" Lewis (1920 – 2010) was expelled by his local branch of the British Legion after he laid a wreath bearing the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament symbol at the Cenotaph in Bolton on Remembrance Sunday. Lewis said that by opposing nuclear weapons and campaigning for peace he was doing nothing more than following the spirit of the words carved on the base of the Cenotaph in Bolton which read "Our brothers died to win a better world. Our part must be to strive for truth, goodwill and peace that their self sacrifice be not in vain." The national British Legion later ordered his reinstatement following a public outcry and Lewis continued to lay a wreath, often including white poppies each year as part of the official Remembrance Day ceremony until his death in 2010

1987 St Mary of the Assumption, Palace St, Bolton Lancashire: The church was opened on Palace Street in I847 and closed in 1987. The building survives and has been integrated into the Holiday Inn hotel as the restaurant.
1987-1988 Bolton had been relegated to the Fourth Division for the first time in their history but went on to win promotion at the first attempt after finishing third during the 1987–88 season. However, Chandler played little part in the success, having suffered a serious knee injury after falling awkwardly whilst jumping to head a ball in only his fourth game of the season, a League Cup tie against Wigan Athletic. Although he was expected to miss the remainder of the season, he did return to make one appearance as a substitute in a match against Colchester United at the end of the season.

1988 (1 Dec) The Queen opened the £5.8 million state-of-the-art Water Place fun complex in Great Moor Street on December 1, 1988, and it was supposed to herald a new era of swimming in Bolton. Built over two floors, the pool area was planted with palm trees imported from Florida, had two water flumes, a wave machine, river rides, cascades and disco music. Visitors could enjoy refreshments at a bar or cafeteria and there were meeting rooms and offices. Council officials hoped the facility would attract about 350,000 swimming visits a year. But the Water Place was plagued with problems and just eight months after opening it had to close for two weeks for repairs.

1988-1989 The 1988–89 Associate Members' Cup, known as the 1988–89 Sherpa Van Trophy, was the sixth staging of the Associate Members' Cup, a knock-out competition for English football clubs in the Third Division and the Fourth Division. The winners were Bolton Wanderers and the runners-up were Torquay United.
The competition began on 21 November 1988 and ended with the final on 28 May 1989 at Wembley Stadium.
In the first round, there were two sections split into eight groups: North and South. In the following rounds each section gradually eliminates teams in knock-out fashion until each has a winning finalist. At this point, the two winning finalists faced each other in the combined final for the honour of the trophy.
1988-1989 Jeff Chandler again suffered injury trouble and struggled to return to the same level he was playing at prior to his injury, later stating that he was "never the same player after that". He argued frequently with manager Neal which, along with his injuries, restricted his appearances; however, he did feature in the club's Associate Members Cup success, scoring a goal in a 4–1 win over Torquay United in the final
